First, let’s see the music video above that was made by Psy. What can you think through this K-POP song? Most people would say drinking culture in Korea.
Representing the culture to people is one of good elements that K-POP carries. However, showing drinking habit and words that are related to drinking in K-POP songs can be extremely detrimental to teenagers and young children who should not be influenced by drinking culture. Still, one out of five male teenagers and one out of ten female teenagers drink illegally in Korea. There are many ways that those teenagers can be influenced, but hearing music, which is K-POP, that contains lyrics about alcohol or drinking definitely has effects on teenage drinking.
Also, most of lyrics in K-POP that are about drinking are bad demonstration of Korean culture. Psy’s Hangover, which is shown above, can be good example. Psy and Snoop Dogg drink together without controlling themselves, become uncontrollable, and finally throw all things up. This pattern can sound interesting for some people, but the movie should not show the element that harms the image of Korean culture.
It is very true that Korea is ranked top for drinking. Drinking is one of the Korean cultures, and therefore relatively more of people drink in Korea than in other country. However, K-POP uses those cultures in the way that can be criticized, and it is important to know that people can think Korea as “drunk country” because of just one K-POP music video.
