k-pop's path
The era of Korean popular music is traced back to early 20th century, during Japanese colonization. Rather than just music, Korean popular music was used as expression and appeal to get out from Japanese control and dominance. Major type of popular music in that era was trot, which got name from “foxtrot.” It is named as trot because trot music is composed of or is the mixture of two-beat rhythm, seven-five stanzas, and unique but also traditional style called Gagok. Another name for Korean trot music is Ppongjjak. This trot music initiated the era of Korean popular music or K-POP, and trot was popular for a while.
Korean music began to have an enormous reform or development in late 20th century when the artist or the musician Seo Tai-Ji & Boys announced albums in 1992. Albums that Seo Tai-Ji & Boys gave out were described as “new paradigm” to Korean music industry because Seo Tai-Ji’s music was not only very unique and unfamiliar but also westernized than any other music at that time. Instead of using just drums, bases, guitars, and keyboards, Seo Tai-Ji’s band used many other foreign instruments to make its own music.
From the appearance of new music or albums that are made by Seo Tai-ji, K-POP began to be popular among not only Korean society but also global society in 21st century. This popularity that Korean music gained throughout the world is called Korean Wave. I will discuss more about Korean Wave on next page.
