Of course, K-POP became one of the most popular music around the world and showed different but unique style that attracted listeners and viewers of K-POP. However, there should be drawbacks for K-POP. One of the drawbacks because of K-POP is “lookism.” The word lookism can sound unfamiliar for most of people around the world, because it was new word that was made in 21st century.
Lookism is the word that is used to describe the ideology that physical attractiveness is the most important part in the life. In other words, when people are pretty and handsome, it is good, but when people are ugly and fat, it is bad. This social ideology and phenomenon became popular in early 2000s, which is the time new idols began to perform. Majority of people were looking to idol stars and they wanted and still want to be like idol stars in television. Looking good can be good element, but this phenomenon gave out bad results. Especially, plastic surgeries in Asian countries can be great example that was happened because of lookism.
Majority of idol stars went through plastic surgery to be “unnecessarily” more handsome and prettier. This culture brought the conception that when people go over plastic surgeries, they can be “better.” In these days, majority of women in Korea had plastic surgeries, and lookism became the truth, especially in Korea. It is nt the only phenomenon in Korea; plastic surgery booms were spread out to Japan, China, Taiwan, and many other Southeast Asian countries.
